Easiest way to design the basic layout of a website

It's actually pretty simple to do it yourself when you start thinking of how everything separates. When you write the HTML, think less about what it will look like, and more about what containers you'll need for what content. Write all of that first. Don't touch a bit of CSS until you at least...

This: <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="1023"> Along with things like this: <font face="Arial" size="1"> And especially stuff like this: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;... Are never, ever recommended by anyone.

Navigation - Sliced images vs Text on background

There really aren't backward compatibility issues to worry about. IE supports it all the way back to 5.5, IIRC, and the rest have had it pretty far back too. Depending on what the background looks like, you may not need images anyway. You can use CSS gradients for a lot of it, and old IE...

I used them for a while. The hosting is on par with any other budget hosting service. Where they really miss the mark is their deplorable customer service. More like customer disservice...

corporate logo refresh.. feedback welcome and appreciated!

I think Fireproof was on the right track, but didn't quite hit the mark. The type in the first is better. The gears in the second look better, but the 3D is too much. Swap the gear in the first with a gear that has 6-10 teeth, and make it flat like in the first image.

which screen size and resolution should i prefer?

No experience with the brand. For me, I'd go as high as your budget will allow on resolution. I'm on 1366 X 768 right now, and it's useable, but it's cramped.

New site please review with feedback

The background is painful on the eyes. I know web designers don't get to say this much, but your logo is too small. It looks out of place. The overall layout is pretty good, if not a bit template-looking. The red on gray is hard to look at. From a code standpoint, it's not bad. You've got a bit...

Are you looking at it with your browser maximized? Is he? If you are and he isn't, that may be why you can't reproduce the problem. Try shrinking your browser window.

Do people do that? Yes, there are people who do. In fact, there are some less savory folks out there who'll grab a template, change some of the colors, fonts and images and pass it off as original work to their clients. I would say if you're just starting out, stay away from WYSIWYG and...

    Australia Sucks!

This is why the conservatives and libertarians in the US fight so hard against the expansion of government. If we don't, we end up with laws like these. I know it seems mean spirited or uncaring to fight against certain issues from the outside, but so much more goes into those bills than just...

    Help For a Newbie

You can get Visual Studio Web Developer Express for free. I've tried it. It's not for me, but that just comes down to simple preference. I personally use either Simple Text 2 or Aptana Studio (both free), and they're great. I switch between the 2 depending on my mood and what I'm doing. Both are...

This looks like a job for: RESPONSIVE WEB DESIIIIIIIIIIIGN. Sorry, got carried away. Anyway, you need media queries. They're a bit on the more advanced side, but they aren't difficult. Basically, it changes the layout based on the size of the browser viewport. 2010 has some of them built in...
