Really sorry to hear about the bad experience with goDaddy, i use goDaddy now for more than 5 years and i am really satisfied with the service.

You can probably register your domain name directly through your hosting provider

I use namecheap.com. Very professional company and great prices for domain names and private whois. In the past, I used name.com, I was satisfied with them also, but ended up using namecheap because of easier account and domains management.

You can use forums to buy domains off other people. This can benefit you as the domain name will have aged and this helps in terms of SEO.
