Well since no one has said anything yet. I’m not really digging on the background image all that much, just doesn’t seem to fit. This looks like a basic wordpress type 2010 theme, and I’m not saying that’s a bad thing as it’s a good jump off, but you might want to spruce it up a bit. Also some of the links, especially the background, could use a little work. Also you might want to ditch he black border around the social icons and center them a bit better. As you only asked for a basic appraisal of the design, I won’t do too far into the code. Just understand the search engines hold descriptions with more weight than keywords.

I think it looks fantastic for a blog, although it's not extraordinary. I really like the header and the logo. The sidebar is okay, but doesn't do anything special to look good.
