W3schools & Search for tutorials. Become fimilar with Adobe such as photoshop, illustrator & image ready. When you get the basic's down you can move on to more advanced software.

Whoa... using after effects for web design is like using a shotgun to kill a bug. If you are going to incorporate animation, use flash.

What do you mean? w3c is where one goes to start learning web design, and professionals go from there. If that site is too complicated for you, you just need to slow down (or improve your english). The only software you should need to buy is photoshop, that's all, the rest is optional in my opinion.
