Help! Please!

A friend who is a photographer has a web site where she shows her work. The problem is people keep clicking on the pictures to see a larger version, then download them and use it without permission.

How can someone stop a viewer from downloading a picture on a site?

There are lots of little tricks to help, but nothing that is fool proof. Javascript can be used to stop right clicks, but anyone can disable java in their browser to get around it. Also, any time someone views the picture, it is stored in their temporary Internet files, which they can just grab from their local computer.

The best solution is for your photographer to place a watermark on his/her images. It can be something very light, but is usually a pretty good deterent.

Unfortunately there is no foolproof way to protect anything online. Im afraid the only option is to use the watermark as siteexpress suggested.

I say this as a professional photographer. Never put anything on the web that you're not prepared to have stolen or plagiarised. By all means have a legitimate copyright statement to cover your work, but don't expect it to be respected. Once you upload a file to a webserver, then you have effectively given it to the world.

You can create your own watermark by placing a semi transparent image or text over the center of the photo.
