Browser question

Can anyone explain why different browsers display websites differently? It's always a small difference, like the placement of a line or the exact location of an image. I was just wondering why Firefox, Chrome, and IE have such small differences (mainly IE).
Thanks

in much the same way as a holden, ford, mazda and bmw are all cars but they perform differently.

it's to do with the rendering engine behind them.

IE's rendering engine sucks. Always has.

Thanks, I was thinking it was an IE issue since it's mostly our sites in IE that look a little different. Usually nothing major, just the placement of a line or the final location of an image. Thanks for the car reference, I'm a car guy so it makes perfect sense. Honda must be the IE of cars then!
