My understanding is that your PR is an average of sorts from all the pages that link to you. So if you receive a link from another site 301 or otherwise I would think that it would impact your site as such. If you have many other in-bound links the effect should be negligible. Just my opinion.

Using press releases can also be a good way to generate back links as well as a temporary boost in traffic. PRnewswire.com and PRweb.com both have good paid packages. If you do a little searching you can surely find some free sites as well.

Don't forget setting your .htaccess file with a 301 redirect so that the search engines see www.domain.com and domain.com as the same site. That way you get full credit for all inbound links rather than having them split. hope this helps.
