i'm about to publish my first website and i think i understand domains and subdomains, but what do you called it when you have a domain name, followed by "slash" followed by something else? for example,

site.com/derivative

when i register a site and i later find i want to add on "/somethingelse", do i have to pay again for that? or do i get rights to anything that is derived from site.com?

A directory.

If you put an HTML file in the hello folder on your website (public_html/hello), then you'll be able to access it using yoursite.com/hello/file.html

If you name your webpage index.html or index.php, your server will load this page when you just type in the directory.

So if you type site.com/derivative, it will look for an index.html file in the derivative folder on your server. This is the same as typing site.com/derivative/index.html. If it's not there, it will display a list of the files.
