What does it take?

I'm sort of new to web design but I'm looking to start doing it as a side job to make some extra money. Although I am not sure where to start, I have a good amount of HTML under my belt, but I realize there is much more to making visually stunning websites. What should i know fully?

After doing some searching i came across this web design company who makes really nice looking websites. http://www.dburnsdesign.com/

Can anyone tell me what is needed to know to be able to create a really nice laid out website like that? I have Adobe Web Premium so if it is program oriented, I'm sure I have it.

Some suggestions although you may already know this:
* consistent layout
* cross browser compatibility (i.e. Looks same in FF, IE and Safari etc.)
* use of depth to give greater dimension(i.e. layers)
* accordian menus such as from the example u have shown:

http://www.dburnsdesign.com/portfolio.php

on the right under the web tab.

* anything that allows the user to be interactive with your site ( like adding photos, voting on issues, leaving comments in a forum.
* user friendly navigation
* fast downloading of pages (the example u have shown is good but slow with flash content where a user does not have a good isp)
* in designing for a business the most common request I get is :
"Can I update the site myself?"
So if you can make it easy for ur client to manage the website after ur initial installation they will be happy, :)

I hope this has been of some assistance to you.
Anyone with further advice? This is a good question for discussion.

Regards,
Aido
