Websites in different monitors/screen resolutions!!!

How do other web designers deal with the vast range of monitors and screen resolutions?

I just re-designed my website and I'm having a bit of difficulty with how it looks on different monitors. It looks fine on my 14" (1024x768). But how do I accommodate the higher resolutions of others without sacrificing how it looks on my own monitor and other smaller resolutions?

I really wanted to create a dynamic design but it doesn't seem to be working out so well.

It's a difficult issue and there doesn't seem to be an easy answer. This is why you see most sites with space left and right of them. I have tried using % to make a page fill the screen irregardless of the resolution but it turned out to be a nightmare.

I recommend you pick a minimum supported resolution and make your site look good in that. From there center it and set you background. This means that as people view it on other resolutions the space either side of your site increases but the overall look of your site remains the same.

Your minimums should be either 1024 X 768 or 800 X 600

In reality you will probably get very few hits at 800 X 600 but it does
happen.

I am starting to lean towards optimizing my sites for 1024 X 768 but at the moment I design for 800 X 600.
