Website redesign best practice?

I have Wiredtree hosting with 3 available ip addresses. I currently have example.com live after a hosting migration that just took place and the website is on one of my available ip addresses.

My original plan was to have the website redesigned before host migration and redirect URL's since I'm able to direct domain using an A record but the timetable didn't work. So, the current website is being redesigned and moving from a combination of both Expression Engine and Wordpress to just Wordpress.

With the availability of multiple ip addresses should I just design my new website and then point domain to new ip address?

I'm thinking this sounds logical as it would allow me to make sure redirects were correct since some URL's will be changing.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Why not simply setup a subdomain for the new design??

I guess it may just be personal preference as you could set a sub directory as well and keep it a clean transfer but I'm not a fan of sub domains for website redesigns when working with content management systems. If I were creating a typical HTML site I would certainly agree with a subdomain or sub directory.
