problem: web design with lots of math equations

I use a lot of mathematical equations in my website which leads to two questions:

1. What is the best tool to use for generating equations embedded in text? I'm not aware that there is an html standard for them. I now use Word 2007 with Mathtype to create html pages that create gif images for equations, but these aren't that good.
2. Are there web design companies that specialize in math oriented sites? (I need to overhaul my present site at www.centar.net.)

What about superscripts/subscripts, including a symbol that has both? Also, some symbols are complicated, like a summation from say "n=1" to "n=100" that would have to go above and below a summation symbol?

well you've got both and in html.
as for layout, you'd need some creative css probably

I've heard about MathML and looked into it. But to my knowledge it isn't supported because it never made it into a standard. My understanding is that it will only work (at least according to Mathtype s/w company) if there's a browser add-on to interpret the XML. Am I correct here?
