Need To Do Web Site Update

Hello. A bit embarrassed here, but here's my story. I have been asked to update my companies website and I'm a novice. I work in photography and I'm used to working with stockbox (web based image program with a tiny amount of code) and using my php panel for creating ftp. Beyond that it's a little over my head when coming to actual web pages.

Problem is that there is soooo much out there I need to know where the best place to start. Figured, I should ask the pros.

I have downloaded a trial for Dreamweaver and Contribute. Contribute was used on our site.

Thanks for your time.

We're going to need more information. What is the current site? What type of updates are you talking? Redesign? Just updating the page content?

I've never heard of Contribute, but it sounds a bit like CushyCMS.

For the moment it's just updating page content. I'd like to add new pages later on. When I used Dreamweaver and connected to my site it did note that some of it was done with Contribute.

When I opened Contribute I entered my ftp info and it came up with a promt below:

"Are you sure you want to remove administrative settings for your website?"

This is where I stopped.

Lynda.com makes it look easy provided the content is editable in Contribute. Unfotunately Lynda.com doesn't say what to do with a promt like that. I assume it will delete the old admin and make me admin? I worry that I might mess up the site.

I found Resources for Learning Web Design here on the forum which is great. I've got a bit of reading to do.

Thanks for your reply-

Are you looking to get stuck in with the source code of the website or use Dreamweaver's drag and drop interface?

It's probably early days, but for the content management side of things look at WordPress, when you get your head around making things in html, you can just slap it onto WordPress and let that do all the hard PHP stuff.
