Need Help With Web Design

I am brand new to web design and I have a friend who wants me to design a web site for his business. Basically he wants a simple site but wants ftp upload and download capability on his web site for his clients. He wants something similar to this site: www.tls-translations.com He wants the following added:

- FTTP portal for customers and employees that allows them to register, get a login and password to a secure folder (of course I would have access to all folders) so that I can drag and drop from one folder to the next and the employee or customer can log on and download his/her files at anytime.
- Email for me and employees, again where I would have access to all accounts, and so that employees get a note sent to their private email that there is an email for them and they should log in to the company email, that way all email between employees and customers would be through the company email system.
- Links to Paypal credit card payment so that customers can pay by credit card to my Paypal account.
- A form for a free quote that allows the customer to upload an ms office document, graphics file, or html file.


HOW do I do this? How much work is possibly involved? Thanks.

What you're asking for is more than just a webpage - you want a web application. A web app is more advanced than a standard web site and will generally require a web developer not just a web designer.

If you are looking to do this for yourself then I would say go ahead! But you have a long road to go if you don't even know any web design let alone web development.

If it's for someones business then my advice is pay someone else to do it. Not only will it be way above your head you're gunna need some web security knowledge as well - if you are planning on letting customers create their own accounts and upload files to your server. -what if they are malicious files?

Email would be another module that requires a lot of work as well. Such a site site is well beyond the capabilities of someone new to web design.

I would be recommending Small Business Server to your friend. It includes Exchange for email and Sharepoint for files. What would be left is the quote form and PayPal stuff, which is within the grasp of a beginner.
