Need bidding advice

I recently won a bid for a redesign of a construction equipment manufacturing company's site. They're a newer company, but there is a lot of potential for growth - They have a good regional presence, and are looking to expand across the US as well as develop their international markets (currently in 7 countries).

They sell and have patents for something like 17 products, and they want a page for each - there will be vector art needed for each of these, as well as illustrations/animations about how the parts are used.

There will be some branding/marketing/brochure design work as well, though the details are still in the works. We're meeting again on Friday to discuss budget.

For a project this size, what would you quote for the price? The number I keep coming back to is $3,000 but I don't know if this is reasonable or not. I don't know if this puts things in perspective, but one of their "kits" that includes the motor and most standard attachment tools runs for about $8,000.

well I guess that all depends on whether or not its just you or a design agency.

the benefit of freelancing is that you can charge less per project than when you are working in an agency simply because your overheads are less.

when freelancing I'm charging $50/hr which works great for me. through the studio we charge $120/hr. so as a freelancer a $3000 job would be substantially larger project than through the studio, where it would be almost just a basic webpage...As long as you are happy with that amount, I'd say go with it...

Personally I'd take the branding/marketing/brochure work out of that price and charge that chunk separately...Obviously printing costs will need to be taken into account as well.

I guess the guy's son wants to design the brochure, anyway. You know how that goes..

Breaking it down, here's what I have (I think):

Site template: $800
Number of pages: $600
SEO, page rank: $150
Validation/Accessibility: $50
Copy-editing for ease of translation: $100
Older browser support: $200
Interactive features: $300
Vector graphics/Illustration: $300

Animation*: $500

*This is separate, because it will take more time than the other things to put together)

edit: Though to be honest, I'd rather not charge for individual parts to the process - I feel like clients would be tempted to pick and choose elements they would think they could get by without. I think I'll just pitch the $3000 as a "full" design, with a $2500 and $2000 being lower quality work, or fewer features kinds of things.

the problem when you break it down is exactly what you said.
the client will pick and choose.

how many pages is it?
i'd charge more for the seo component, ditto copy editing. (which really end up being one and the same anyway)

$17 per illustration is also a bit light on, i'd certainly try and push that one further...
