Hello,

I've never used CMS before but need to design a blog style site for someone.

I'm not sure where to start so hopefully someone can save me time and energy and point me in the right direction!

Do I just design a site as normal and then setup a wordpress account for the client, upload my site and from there indicate which bits are editable?

Or do I set up the wordpress account and do all the design from inside that?

Am I right in assumiung the site is hosted on wordpress servers and you pay them for the hosting?

Any advice much appreciated. thanks :)

Wordpress is just a set of files you download, and you can install it on your own server or a hosted server. You just create a database, then launch your browser and point it to the install file, and then it walks you through the setup process.

From there you can start with a blank theme, and edit the css, and other needed files. I have to admit it is a little tricky at first. I have just recently started creating custom themes, to match my designs. If you use firefox and have firebug installed it will make it a lot easier to figure out which parts call what so you can edit them in a css file.

Best of luck, if you need any help just send me a message.

Here is a quick 5 min install instruction guide that will be great for you to get wordpress up and running.

WordPress, is free but of course you can choose to have a Premium which you need to pay. I believe, customization is not really that hard, just do some exploration there! :)

To answer your question no you dont design your site as normal. You can if you wish so that way you can send your client a Mock up. You end up, uploading your CMS to your host or a local test server and filling it with some filler content and then you design a theme for it. http://themeshaper.com/ they are a life saver when it comes to first time theme design, their site is full of helpful tips.
