Background image size

Hi everyone. I'm about to make a new website and have a question which has been bugging me for a while!

If I have a left hand Div which contains a graphic - what length should I make that graphic? What's the best size to ensure it looks ok on different screen resolutions?

I hope that makes sense, I'm not sure whether to make it 600 in length or should it be larger?

Background image

To avoid the problem of the length, I normally try to create an image which fades right at the bottom into the same color as the background color of the page. Otherwise , on some screens, you're bound to get an abrupt line where the image is renewed.

That's what I've done for the background of this page :

and the same would apply to the background of a div within the main section of your page.
