Animated Link Image?

I'm looking for a way to use a image I already have (Home, Contact, etc) and create something so that when they are hovered over, a vine will slowly appear around it.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm lost on how to do this.

Maybe use a gif animation which is associated with the :hover css
