    IE and Firefox Compatibility

Welcome to the biggest web design headache: IE. Start by setting the margin and padding of everything to zero. There are a plethora of ways to do this, and people can debate for hours on which to use, but the easiest way is: * {margin:0; padding:0;} PNG alpha transparency doesn't work in IE 7...

    Website designer starting

I would start by not emailing them. Visit them instead. Find out if they have an existing site, and what you can offer that they don't have. Bring a pad of grid paper and begin by sketching concepts while you are there talking with them.

    Need A Review...

As a general rule, you should avoid using images for text as much as possible. Ditto on the logo. Very nice.

The site looks really good. What is the font in your header? The only thing I noticed, was that the log-in link doesn't work.

    My portfolio: http://min.dvir.us/.

Try adding a clear:right; to that image. The text should move up then. As far as the layout, it's a nice, clean design, but it feels a little too open. Consider shrinking the left column a little bit, and tightening up the spacing. White space is good, but too much just makes things look...

Small piece of code failing validation

It might be better to go ahead and change the doctype to strict. If you validate to transitional and then change it, you may find a lot more errors just when you thought you were done with everything. No sense in wasting your time validating against rules you won't ultimately be using.

    The Vacation Thread

I just got orders (I'm active duty USAF) to Tinker AFB, OK and I'm currently stationed at Elmendorf AFB, AK. That said, we plan to drive the ALCAN highway down. Looking forward to the trip.

    Please review my site

Nice page. The graphics are nice, and the layout is clean, but I have to agree that the page curls are a bit overdone.

    Photoshop Splicing Help!

What I usually do is slice around the images on the page. First, I hide all background layers, then slice around the images. That gives the images a transparent background (saved in .png). That way, if I want to adjust background colors, I don't have to change the images themselves. Then, I...

Automatically make the page grow with content

You have an extra </div> after the second <img> tag in the body section. I downloaded everything, and removed that, and it worked like a charm.

    Stock Photography Help and Advice

With Shutterstock, you either buy credits, or pay a recurring fee, and you can use the images for just about anything. With CC or WikiCommons, the license is on the page for the image. I use CC and Wiki mostly, or I take my own photos.

What are adequate system specs for creating web sites?

While I can't agree that the Adobe suite on a high-end Mac is entirely necessary, you really should expand your budget some. Or, at the very least buy someone's used rig off Craigslist. As far as Gimp, if you want free alternatives, give Paint.net a look. It feels more... Photoshop-y.
